1972 Ford Mustang Mach 1, 351 Cleveland V8, 3-spd Automatic
The Ford Mustang was successfully introduced in April 1964 as a sporty pony car to attract younger buyers into Ford products. After a few years of development, Ford saw the need to create performance Mustangs to compete with GM. The 1971 Mustang was the last major restyling of the first-generation Mustang and the car grew in every dimension compared with the outgoing model. With a nearly 3 inches (76 mm) wider track, its size was most evident in the Sportsroof models with its sleek and low roofline.
The Mach 1 was a performance-oriented option package originally introduced 1969 utilising the Sports Roof body and adding numerous visual and performance enhancing items such as black hood treatment, competition suspension, chrome exhaust tips, deluxe interior livery and dealer optional chin spoiler. In 1972 the Mach 1 was available in three 351 Cleveland engine options; the H-code 2-V, the M-code 4-V and the ever desirable Q-code 351CJ (Cobra Jet or GT engine) offering 266hp at 5,400 rpm.
Riding on steel wheels and original full dished hubcaps and trim rings (some pavement rash here), this is the quintessential 70’s muscle car, with the large and loud 5800cc V8 powerplant. This vehicle has been meticulously maintained with every mechanical component working as it should. From the refurbished cylinder heads (4V replaced with 2V to add some bottom end torque at altitude) to a new water pump and radiator with all new hoses and electric fan, rebuild transmission and diff with new battery and electrical fuel pump. Equipped with power steering and power brakes with recently overhauled booster.
The vehicle has been repainted in the original colour with painted decals, but the beautiful original cloth/vinyl bucket seat and floor mounted shifter still adorn the interior. The radio is non-functional but looks period correct while the carpeting needs some TLC, especially around the driver’s door sill. Still has the original collapsible spare in the boot.
